  • Coral: a Pessimist in Paradise is a wonderful addition to the world of accessible scientific books. His style is discursive and mildly truculent. He not only explains the geology but the history and ecology of coral reefs. Coral has been found in 10,000 old graves and was used as a currency, exchanged for spices, musk and carpets from India and China. Coral reefs don't use oxygen but produce it. They are responsible for our atmosphere and the oil we use to such ruinous effect. Charles Darwin first guessed how coral lagoons formed although his theory was not proved until after the Second World War when measuring the impact of a nuclear test. Professor Steve Jones argues that the destruction and exploitation of coral will bring about our own extinction.
