Martin Rowson

He will be tracing the history of cartoons from the satire of Gillray and argue the case for the role of cartoonist not just as artisan but as bona fide political journalist. British Library Events, November 2005


A panel, including authors Linda Grant and Howard Jacobson, will discuss the comic novel Tristram Shandy on November 7 at 18:30. [The next in this Classic Book series of events will take place on 14 December: Beloved, by Nobel Prize winner Toni Morrison. ]

On 30 November Alexander McCall Smith, author of the bestselling No 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series, will be talking at 18:30.

Fantasy and fiction

Bloomsbury are hosting a YLS/SLG event on 17 November at 6:00 pm at the Ewart Room, CILIP (7 Ridgmount Street, W1E 7AE). It is billed as "a unique opportunity to meet three highly-acclaimed authors who have approached the fantasy genre in different ways": N M Browne, Anna Dale and Mary Hoffman. Nobel Prize for Literature

I'm sure nobody's missed the fact that Harold Pinter has won the Nobel Prize for Literature. We have a great many of his works in the library, including DVDs and videos of films which he has either directed or written the screenplay for. There is a display just inside the inner room. LIST

Booker Prize Winner




I am delighted that John Banville was announced as the winner of this year's Man Booker Prize for Fiction last night with his wonderful novel The Sea.

So far the winner of the People's Prize is Kazuo Ishiguro with my other favourite, Never Let Me Go.
